Hand-Carved & Polychrome Wood
Barong is the guardian spirit who stands as the eternal opponent of Rangda, the feared witch queen. Their legendary battle is unusual because it has no true ending. Neither force ever completely defeats the other. Instead, their struggle represents the balance between opposing powers—light and darkness, order and chaos, protection and destruction. The lesson is not that evil disappears, but that harmony comes from maintaining equilibrium.
During traditional Barong performances in Bali, the appearance of this wide-eyed guardian is both dramatic and reassuring. Villagers believe Barong's presence helps cleanse the community of harmful influences. Although his bulging eyes, tusks, and fangs appear intimidating, they are meant to frighten away malevolent spirits.
