Archive Notes

This amber glass bottle has its original red-and-white label for Chloroform Liniment, distributed by Everington’s Drug Store of Laurinburg, North Carolina. The formula printed on the label lists alcohol, chloroform, aromatic spirit of ammonia, mustard and other ingredients, together with an emphatic POISON warning and antidote instructions.

Chloroform liniments were once rubbed onto the skin as counterirritants for muscular soreness, rheumatism and stiffness. The idea was to create warmth and surface irritation that distracted from deeper pain. Chloroform preparations eventually disappeared from ordinary pharmacy shelves as their toxicity became better understood.
