Large Vintage Pharmacy Display Jar, Hand-Painted “Hashish” Label Over a foot tall and made from deeply saturated cobalt blue glass, this oversized jar has the scale of an old drugstore display piece. Across the front is a hand-painted HASHISH label.
Cannabis was formally recognized in the United States Pharmacopeia in 1850, and cannabis preparations remained available in European and North American pharmacies into the early twentieth century.
Large cobalt vessels of this general scale were produced throughout the mid-twentieth century as storage jars, decorative apothecary jars, and shop-display pieces. A strong display object for a cabinet of curiosities, vintage pharmacy collection, dark botanical interior, or anyone drawn to the overlap between medicine, folklore, and counterculture.
