Archive Notes

First published in the sixteenth century, Agrippa's De Occulta Philosophia attempted to organize the magical knowledge of his age into a coherent philosophical system connecting the natural world, astrology, mathematics, religion, angels, spirits, Cabala and the hidden properties believed to exist within plants, stones, animals and celestial bodies.

This 1974 edition presents Book I of Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy through a reprinting of the 1913 De Laurence edition. A vintage printing of one of the foundational texts of the Western esoteric tradition. Generations of occultists repeatedly returned to Agrippa, and many symbols and correspondences from ceremonial magic can be traced through his work.

Agrippa wrote during the Renaissance, when magic, theology, medicine, astrology and what we would now call science had far more boundaries. His great occult work tried to explain how the visible world might be connected to invisible celestial and spiritual forces, and how the knowledgeable magician might work within those relationships.
