Large Vintage Bavent Style Faience Sow, Circa 1940 The piece is modeled in heavy earthenware and covered in a cream-white glaze, with defined musculature along the body, an articulated snout, and inset glass eyes. She measures approximately 15½ inches from nose to tail.
The form is closely associated with the animal figures produced at Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent in Normandy, France. Founded in 1842, the Bavent pottery became known for architectural terracotta, roof finials, and wonderfully characterful models of domestic and farm animals.
