Archive Notes
This hand-painted devotional figure depicts Santo Cristo dos Milagres (Holy Christ of the Miracles), one of Portugal's most beloved religious images and a symbol closely associated with the Azores. The figure portrays Christ seated among clouds and cherub heads, holding a reed while wearing the Crown of Thorns and displaying the Sacred Heart.
This sculpture likely originated from a shrine or altar, examples of which were produced during the mid-20th century for homes throughout the Azorean community.
