Cobra Demon Folk Art Wall Sculpture | 17 in.
In Sinhalese folklore, the Nāga are ancient serpent beings that dwell beneath rivers, lakes, and hidden realms below the earth. They are guardians of treasure, keepers of secret knowledge, and powerful spirits capable of bringing either protection or catastrophe depending on how they are approached. In parts of Sri Lanka, offerings were sometimes left where Nāga were thought to dwell. The Naga Raksha combines these serpent powers with the fierce protective nature.

Few forms in Sri Lankan mask carving are as visually striking as the Naga Raksha. Identified by its radiating cobra hoods, fierce expression, protruding tongue, and layered carving, this type of Raksha mask was traditionally associated with protective ritual performances, processions, and Kolam theatre. Despite its fearsome appearance, the Naga Raksha is considered an apotropaic figure—intended to ward off evil spirits and energy.
