An extraordinary mid-century Balinese mask depicting Rangda, the fearsome witch deity of Balinese mythology and ritual performance. Hand-carved and painted in wood, the mask has a gilded animal hair headdress and long fabric tongue decorated with reflective metal ornaments. Rangda represents destructive and chaotic forces that cannot be eliminated.

Condition: Moderate age-related wear throughout. Some paint loss, surface abrasions, and wear are visible to the carved components. The metal ornaments covering the tongue have some losses, bending, and detached/missing sections. Wear and losses are also present to the headdress. Hair is tangled and uneven with expected shedding and breakage. Old stitching, wire and attachment points are visible. Sold in its present condition; please view photographs carefully.
