Standing approximately 31 inches high, this hand-carved wooden statue depicts Garuda, the legendary bird deity of Hindu and Buddhist tradition. It has a large central body of wood with feather and wing attachments fitted into the back. 

Garuda is an image of power, freedom, protection and sovereignty in Indonesia. His symbolism reaches far back into Indonesian history. During the 11th century, King Airlangga used the face of Garuda as a royal emblem in Java. Garuda is best known as the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu. In Hindu tradition, Garuda is the enemy and hunter of serpent beings.
