Early-20th Century Devil Ceremony Mask This mask combines deeply carved hardwood with preserved animal skin, fur, and attached sheet-metal teeth. The metal teeth are seen on older Mexican festival masks to create a reflection that flashed during performances. The maker used natural animal skin and fur (likely goat) to create eyebrows, cheeks, and a beard. The worn black pigment, old hide, and oxidized metal testify to decades of handling and use. Masks like this would transform people into supernatural beings.
Across central and southern Mexico, masked dances blended Indigenous traditions with Catholic folklore, filling plazas with devils, beasts, tricksters, and spirits. These performances relied on exaggerated faces that could be easily recognizable from a distance. Some makers pushed realism by incorporating actual animal materials into the masks themselves.
