Archive Notes

By the 1950s and ’60s, Siamese cats were the perfect subjects for the lines of postwar decorative art.

This oversized ceramic sculpture has two Siamese cats joined together.

The cat on the right has a crackled green textured inlay that shimmers.

By the late 19th century, Siamese cats had become fashionable status symbols in the West by the late 19th century, but American popular culture gave them an especially memorable boost in 1955, when Disney's Lady and the Tramp introduced Si and Am—the scheming Siamese pair whose exaggerated movements and angular bodies helped cement the breed's association with elegant mischief.

By the middle of the century, ceramic manufacturers on several continents were producing Siamese figures ranging from tiny shelf ornaments to enormous television-top statues. Surviving examples now occupy that particularly fun intersection between mid-century design, animal figurines and full-blown vintage kitsch.

This is very much the latter: twelve and a half inches of feline attitude.
